A 47th minute penalty converted by striker Jordan Ayew against Sao Tome and Principe sent Ghana top of Group C in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
China-based Emmanuel Boateng was brought down in the penalty area a few minutes into the second half and Ayew converted the resultant spot-kick to give Ghana the maximum points.
It was the Black Stars’ second game in the qualifiers, having beaten South Africa’s Bafana Bafana 2-0 in their first qualifier.
There was little excitement in the match on Monday as the Stars failed to convert the few opportunities that came their way in the first half.
Samuel Owusu had failed to hit the ball after he was put through by an unusually selfless Jordan Ayew.
Owusu, starting the game at Estadio Nacional 12 de Julho in Sao Tome, allowed the home side to recoup in defence.
Boateng also came close but could not break the deadlock.
Maritzburg United goalkeeper Richard Ofori almost had a field day.
The Stars had a perfect restart as the goal came a few minutes from recess.
The 1-0 away win gives Ghana six points with Sudan in second place.
