Nations League; Germany vs France

Germany headed out to Russia as one of the favourites to retain their crown but never recovered from a 1-0 loss to Mexico in their opening game.

They needed a fantastic goal from Toni Kroos five minutes into stoppage time to beat Sweden 2-1 and avoid an even earlier exit from the competition.

Then with Sweden beating Mexico, Germany were caught out twice in added time to lose 2-0 to South Korea and end their tournament.

Coach Joachim Low was shocked by his side’s premature departure and added: “I’m incredibly disappointed by this elimination.”

Despite calls for him to leave his position, Low remains in charge but Mesut Ozil has since announced his retirement while Leroy Sane is back in the squad after being omitted for the World Cup.

Didier Deschamps became only the third man to win the World Cup as a player and coach after steering Les Bleus to a 4-2 win over Croatia in the final.

Deschamps had lifted the trophy on home soil at France 98 and he was successful again as they erased memories of their Euro 2016 final loss to Portugal in Paris.

Kylian Mbappe was named the tournament’s best young player while Paul Pogba looked a different player to the one which has struggled for consistency at Manchester United.

Deschamps had included his entire World Cup-winning squad with the exception of injured goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.
