England great to retire from international cricket

Cook is sixth on the all-time list of Test run-scorers and has made a record 11,627 runs as an opener.

The opener, 33, has scored 12,254 runs and made 32 centuries in 160 Tests – all England records.

Alastair Cook has announced he will retire from international cricket following the completion of England’s Test series against India at the Oval next week. He’s one of his country’s most decorated players.

Cook’s final Test begins on Friday and he can move up to fifth on the all-time list of leading Test run scorers if he scores more than 146 against India at the Oval.

England have already secured an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-Test series following their 60-run victory over India at the Ageas Bowl on Sunday.

While he is stepping away from the international scene, Cook has confirmed he will continue to play for his county Essex.
